Manage your online reputation as you start your career

Whether you are a student starting your career or someone who has a few years' of experience, it is important for you to manage your online identity and reputation. It is becoming way too common for young people to get in trouble for pictures on Facebook and posts on online forums. A simple Google search can tell a recruiter more about you than your resume, so make sure that whatever Google turns up on you isn't harmful to your employment prospects.

Here I am reproducing some helpful tips you can use to manage your online reputation:
  1. Claim your Google Profile and Google your name often to see what comes up
  2. Purchase your internet nameplate, that is the url matching your name
  3. Create a LinkedIn and other online profiles
  4. Make sure your Facebook pictures are private, and better yet, don't include anything you don't want a prospective employer to see
  5. Start a blog or a Posterous where you can occasionally post material related to your field
