2010 Transparency Index Places Pakistan 143rd out of 178 Countries

The 2010 Transparency Index was released recently: http://www.transparency.org/policy_research/surveys_indices/cpi/2010/results ... however, I would say that the accuracy of this is dubious at best.  How else do you explain Pakistan ranking 143rd most corrupt out of 178 countries?  I would say anything lower than 170s is an insult to Pakistan's government.  I say that Zardari should lodge an official complaint.

Or ... Pakistanis should lodge a complaint because I can only imagine Zardari reading the report and calling his secretary saying: "Did you see the corruption index?  You all were on my case to reduce corruption, reduce corruption, but the report clearly shows that there is plenty of room for more."

Pakistan flood aid efforts hampered by U.S. military

Media_httpwwwdawncomw_tmilw

Jacobabad airbase is one of the most important airbases of Pakistan air force and it not available to the Pakistani military right now to run aid operations.

Why?

It is being used by the U.S. military to fight the war on terror.

And then we wonder why is it that militants continue to be successful in recruiting innocent youth for their evil designs.

Americans ‘Texting' To Support Pakistan Flood Relief

August 3, 2010

Islamabad - Moved by news of the devastating floods in Pakistan, Americans have begun raising money for emergency relief in Pakistan using the latest communications technologies.  By texting the word SWAT to telephone number 50555, cellular phone users will be able to donate $10 to help flood victims in Pakistan through the U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR)

An estimated 3 million people have been affected by the flooding.  UNHCR emergency response teams are distributing tents, relief supplies, and humanitarian assistance to an estimated 200,000 people displaced by the recent flooding.

In Balochistan, UNHCR is delivering 4,000 tents, 2,700 plastic sheets, 2,200 kitchen sets, and 4,000 plastic mats to the hardest hit areas.  The organization is also active in Kyber Pakhtunkhwa, where it has distributed 3,000 tents in Nowshera District.

Islamic banking growing in Pakistan but still lagging behind

ISLAMIC banking industry in Pakistan remained least affected by the global financial crisis. It experienced some problems only after this crisis had snowballed into recession in advanced economies affecting growth prospects of Pakistan and other developing countries.

The economy did not affect the Islamic banking sector in Pakistan much or for long. In fact, the Islamic banking sector almost doubled its market share.

However, as the article mentions, Islamic banking still only makes up 3.1% of total deposits and 5.1% of assets. For a country where Muslims make up over 97% of the total population, these numbers show that much more work needs to be done for Islamic banking to become mainstream. And even more work is needed for Islamic banking to become sustainable in countries like Canada where Muslims only make up about 2% of the total population.
